New low-cost duplex printer from DNP

As indicated in last week’s story on Ted’s Cameras, the DNP DS80-DX duplex dye-sub printer is now available in Australia.

DS80DX_fullIt’s built on the printing technology in the existing and well-proven DS80 single-sided printer. It prints one-sided (simplex) photos in formats from 10 x 20cm (4×8-inch) up to 20x30cm (8×12 inch) and double-sided (duplex) prints for photobooks, greeting cards and calendars. Formats range from 10x20cm greeting cards, 20x15cm, 20x20cm square format or 20x30cm photobooks, and 20x30cm calendars.

Print speed is around 40 seconds for a one-sided 8×12-inch print and around 2 minutes 15 seconds for double-sided 8x12s. Standard print resolution is 300dpi, with a 300x600dpi high res option also available.

It’s a three-colour printer (YMC) with an overcoat added. Matte or glossy finish is available in both one-sided and two-sided printing.

The printer has a space-saving modular design. It actually consists of two components – the printer and a ‘turning unit’ for the receiving paper. One-sided paper is roll-fed, while the duplex paper is sheet-fed. The two units, each weighing 15Kg, can be separated for convenient re-location. Dimensions are 322 (w) x 500 (d) x 415mm (h)

The printer handles 55 sheets per pack of duplex and 130 single-sided prints per roll (8×10) or 110 single-sided prints (8×12). Media is front-loaded for added convenience and flexibility.

DNP says that the DS80-DX is a superior choice for photo books as the overcoat finish -that can only be produced using dye sublimation thermal transfer technology – creates a more non-adhesive print surface. Pages will not stick together, even in humid conditions.

The DNP DS80-DX print driver is Windows-based (W7 or 8), so its compatible with a variety of lab or kiosk software.
