There are no plans to release the DxO One, a pocket-sized iPhone/iPad-attachable camera which created a stir among camera enthusiasts on announcement last week.

‘For now it will be available in the United States, UK, France and Germany upon release,’ said DeMarcus Wood, DxO. ‘We have not yet discovered possibilities in Australia, as it is a new product and thus more concentrated on our “home turf” in the beginning.’
The DxO One is up against the Sony QX series and the Olympus Air camera modules which together create a new category of camera. Or smartphone accessory. Or something.
The Sony QX100 has what seems to be the same 1-inch, 20-megapixel sensor as the DxO One, but in addition boasts a 3.6x Carl Zeiss f1.8 lens.
The Olympus Air is equipped with the same 16 megapixel Live MOS image sensor and TruePicVII image processor as the latest OM-D and PEN models. It marries up to the full range of M43 lenses and is supported by a raft of apps. It has an 81-point AF system, 10 fps burst mode, and an electronic shutter with speeds up to 1/16000.
In Australia, Sony currently stocks the QX100 and QX10 (although the QX100 seems to be deleted in the US Sony range), while the Olympus Air is only available in Japan and the US. Olympus Australia has not discounted a local launch but says there is ‘no set launch date for Australia’.
When prices are compared, the DxO One is being offered on pre-order for US$599 (around $775), while the Sony QX100 is $499 from the Sony store, and the Olympus Air with a basic 14-42mm lens also weighs in at around $500 with a direct currency conversion.
