New Nikon compacts arriving

Nikon has announced October availability of two new digital compacts – the Coolpix P7800 and the Coolpix S02.

7800The Coolpix P7800 (pictured right) has a 7.6 x 5.7mm (ie, tiny) backside illuminated 12 megapixel CMOS sensor and a 7x optical zoom Nikkor lens (28-200mm in 35mm format). It continues the design of the P7700, with a light, durable, magnesium alloy body and homely form with operational controls positioned for ease of use.

It has a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 921K dots, dioptre adjustment and 100 percent frame coverage, plus a 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle. A built-in neutral density (ND) filter reduces the light passing into the lens by three EV – ‘enabling more control over exposures in bright situations’. It also includes a virtual horizon display.

Optional accessories include Speedlights, a GPS Unit, a wireless mobile adapter, and wireless remote controller.

S02The Coolpix S02 (pictured right) replaces the small and light ┬áS01, which was Nikon’s smallest and lightest digital camera. Roughly the size of a business card, it has a 13-megapixel CMOS sensor and 3x lens. It is offered in four bright colours (silver, white, pink and blue) and is equipped with a 2.7-inch LCD monitor.

Nikon did not supply RRPs (‘pricing at dealers’ discretion’) but US pricing is US$550 and US$180 respectively.
