New Canon prime lens and 24-70mm zoom

Canon has announced pre-Chistmas release of a couple of premium new lenses – an L series f4 24-70mm and an f2 35mm prime lens.

Canon’s EF 24–70mm f/4L IS USM lens measures just 93mm and offers excellent dust and water resistance plus Canon’s superior ‘L-series’ optical performance. It is designed for use with Canon’s full-frame DSLR cameras.

It covers a popular focal length range for general-purpose photography and features a constant maximum aperture of f4 throughout the entire zoom range. A nine-blade circular aperture diaphragm ensures attractive bokeh. The lens construction has 15 lens elements in 12 groups, with two aspherical and two UD lens elements to reduce aberrations and deliver high resolution throughout the zoom range. A fluorine coating on the front and rear elements enables easy maintenance and cleaning.

For macro shooting, Canon’s Hybrid IS system (with up to three stops of stabilisation at 0.5x) corrects both angular and shift camera shake at the same time, and activates automatically when the zoom ring is set to ‘macro’. Ring USM motors and internal focusing ensure fast , silent autofocus with full-time mechanical manual focus enabled during AF operation.

The new EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens replaces Canon’s EF 35mm f/2 lens, adding Image Stabilisation and an ultra-sonic motor (USM) to this popular wide-angle prime lens for higher image quality and functionality. It features a circular aperture diaphragm and lens coatings optimised for minimal ghosting and flare, and will deliver attractive bokeh at wide apertures.

Both lenses are scheduled for release in Australia from the beginning of December 2012. Pricing will be set ‘at dealer discretion’. US published prices are US$1500 for the 24-70mm zoom lens and US$850 for the f2 35mm prime lens.
