Nikon confirms full-frame mirrorless, new mount

Nikon has officially confirmed the development of a full frame Nikon mirrorless camera and new lenses featuring an all-new Nikon lens mount, with an actual announcement scheduled for August 23.

Nikon is hyping up the new mount, saying it is the ‘pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance,’ – but without elaborating on how and why that is the case.

Nikon’s teaser campaign on the new full-frame mirrorless campaign features this shadowy beast.

The announcement also confirmed the development of a mount adapter for the vast number of F-Mount Nikkor lenses, which will immediately expand the number of prospects for the new Nikon mirrorless system.

The new camera looks like it has a both a large LCD screen and an EVF – which is all to the good!

And that’s about it before the PR boilerplate stuff, written to warm the cockles of the marketing manager’s heart: ‘The result of Nikon’s advanced optical and manufacturing capabilities gained through over a century of heritage…superior image processing technology…expertise built up through the development of Nikon’s digital-SLR cameras…we are committed to providing photographers with the ability to capture images that are richer and more vivid than ever before…Nikon will continue to lead imaging culture’…etcetera, etcetera.

The new camera will be pitched at buyers of 2018’s current Photocounter camera of the year, the Sony A7 III, and will have a 24-megapixel sensor and a body-only price to match it.

Shipping is expected in October, following Photokina.

Speculated specs:
– 24-megapixel sensor;
– Priced around US$2000;
– Nikon ‘Z-mount’ with external diameter of 49mm, flange focal distance 16mm;
– 5-axis in-body stabilisation;

– 9fps;
– 4K video;
– XQD and CF Express cards;
– 3.6 million dot EVF.

At one stage the rumour-mongers were talking about two new full frame Nikon mirrorless cameras, one sporting a 48-meg sensor. We shall see.
