Huawei gets clear run at Photokina

Even though the lion’s share of images are now captured on smartphones, Huawei has distinguished itself by being the only smartphone manufacturer to exhibit at Photokina 2018, the world’s premier digital imaging trade exhibition (Cologne, Sept 26-29).

And if, as Woody Allen once noted, 80 percent of life is just showing up, Huawei has had a big win already! The company will use the trade fair to highlight the image-capture superiority of its P20 and P20 Pro phones.

The 40-megapixel main camera is in the centre, with the 20-megapixel mono camera to the left near the flash unit and the 85mm-equivalent portrait camera on the right.

In both camera specifications and, according to reviews, performance and image quality, the new Huawei P20 Pro phone leaves top-selling and more expensive models like the Apple iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy S9 in its wake – perhaps a good reason for these premiums brands not to show up.

The P20 Pro has a three-sensor/three lens front camera system which has a DxOMark score of 109, leaving the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus (DxO score of 99); the Google Pixel 2 (98) and Apple iPhone X (97) in its wake. It’s perhaps a leading indicator of the future of the market that Chinese manufacturers – Huawei, Xiomi and HTC – account for four of the five top spots in the DxO camera phone league table.

The 40-megapixel sensor (from Sony) is actually physically larger than the 1/2.3-inch type chips found in most digital compact cameras.

DxOMark concluded: ‘We are used to every new smartphone camera generation being slightly better than the previous one, but looking at the images and test results from the P20 Pro, it seems Huawei has skipped one or two generations. The results are simply that good. The P20 Pro’s triple camera setup is the biggest innovation we have seen in mobile imaging for quite some time and is a real game changer.’

Huawei claims it can take photos at ISO102,400 sensitivity, and can capture video at 4K, and super slo-mo at 960fps. It has 5x Leica optical zoom, an AMOLED display and IP67 water and dust resistance.

There’es also a 24-megapixel selfie camera on the other side!

Huawei will also feature a photo exhibition as well as products and technologies at Photokina.

‘Our current high-end smartphone Huawei P20 Pro is revolutionising mobile photography with its Leica Triple camera in combination with Artificial Intelligence. In addition to our Huawei products, we will also be putting on an exhibition at photokina with pictures from our ‘Huawei Foto Konsortium’ – further proof of our commitment to continuously drive smartphone photography,’ said William Tian, manager, Consumer Business Group, Huawei Germany.
