Canon announces G1 X Mk III

UPDATE: Canon press release: Canon GX 1 MkIII – October 2016For about 12 months the various camera rumour blogs have been predicting that the next G1 series compact from Canon will have an APS-C sensor, but those jungle drums have become deafening over the last week or so, with an announcement now apparently just around the corner.

The Canon Powershot GX 1 Mk III will compete against other premium compacts like the high-performance Sony RX 100 Mk IV.

The new camera – let’s call it the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, everyone else is –  will be announced some time in October. The New Camera blog goes so far as to pinpoint it to next Tuesday. It will have a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor with dual pixel autofocus, and a 24-70mm f2.8-5.6 lens. The Mark II had a slightly smaller, 1.5-inch sensor with 12.8-megapixel resolution. Shipping could begin in November.

US price is either US$1200 or $1299 – so probably some change out of $2000 locally after GST is applied. This is a bit of a hike on the Mark II’s current sub-$1000 RRP.

Known specs, according to various websites including Amazon’s DPReview:
– 24-megapixel APS-C Sensor;
– Dual Pixel AF;
– DIGIC 7 processor;
– 24-70mm f/2.8-5.6 (35mm equivalent);
– Touch AF;
– Dynamic IS;
– Dust & water resistant;
– Built-in OLED EVF.
