Olympus has announced two new lenses for its OM-D and PEN ranges – the M.Zuiko Digital ED 8mm f1.8 PRO and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO.
Olympus says the 8mm f1.8 PRO (pictured right) is ‘the world’s brightest fisheye lens’, while the 7-14mm f2.8 PRO is a professional-grade ultra-wide zoom with a fast constant aperture.
The 8mm f1.8 PRO lens is targeted at photographers with astronomy, underwater, landscape and professional-imaging interests. It captures distinctive ‘fisheye’ perspectives with the viewing angle of a 16mm lens (35mm equivalent).
Comatic (image distortion) and chromatic aberrations at large apertures have been minimised – optical issues especially critical in wide field astro-imaging. It comprises seventeen lens elements arranged in fifteen groups, to achieve high clarity across the image field up to the periphery of the recorded image. Special lens elements include Olympus’ proprietary Super HR (Super High Refractive) and Super ED (Super Extra-Low Dispersion) glass.
It weighs just 315g.
The 7-14mm f2.8 PRO zoom (pictured right) is the ultra-wide member of the ‘professional trio’ of fast Zuiko f2.8 zooms; the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm PRO and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm PRO lenses are already in market. Their combined focal length ranges from 14-300mm (35mm equivalent.)
The new wide angle zoom is aimed at the professional and enthusiast with reportage, sport, landscape, nature and architecture imaging requirements. It features the highest performance optical materials, including DSA (Dual Super Aspheric), EDA (Extra-Low Dispersion Aspheric) and three Super ED elements, for superior image clarity. Distortion is minimal at all zoom settings.
High optical quality at wide apertures facilitates handheld photographic freedom when combined with an Olympus camera body that has the Olympus 5-Axis Image Stabilisation, such as the professional OM-D E-M1 and the E-M5 Mark II. The lens weighs 534g.
Both lenses are environmentally-sealed against dust, water and the freezing cold (to -10 degrees Celsius). Olympus ZERO multicoating (Zuiko Extra-low Reflectance Optical) is applied on all lens surfaces of both lenses to effectively suppress ghosting and flare.
They are expected in late June, with retail prices yet to be announced.
