The G16 features a 12-megapixel 1/1.7 type (7.6 x 5.7mm) CMOS sensor, with a top sensitivity of ISO 12,800. An  f1.8-2.8 lens covers a 5x optical zoom range, equivalent to 28-140mm in 35mm format. Like the G15, it offers a range of manual controls and excellent handling for everyday use, and has an aluminium body.

It is also the first PowerShot G-series model to feature wireless connectivity. The PowerShot G16 is scheduled to go on sale from mid-October. Local pricing appears to range from $480 – 520.

The PowerShot S120 is the first S-series model to feature an f1.8 lens. Covering a focal length range equivalent to 24-120mm in 35mm format, the lens on the S120 provides a aperture range selection for extended low light shooting. It’s equipped with the same sensor and image processor as the PowerShot G16, and also features a range of manual controls. Other features include a 3-inch touch screen and Wi-Fi functionality.

Both these cameras also support GPS tagging via mobile, enabling location data to be added to shots using Canon’s dedicated app for smartphones or tablets.

The PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 support Full HD (1920 x 1080) 60p movie recording with stereo sound. The PowerShot G16 features Fine Detail Movie processing and advanced noise reduction at 60p, for shooting movies in difficult lighting. Manual focusing is also available.

The PowerShot S200 combines a 10-megapixel CCD sensor with Canon’s HS (High Sensitivity) System, DIGIC 5 Image Processor and f2.0 lens. The Smart Auto shooting mode detects the best settings for 36 scenes, while a number of Creative Filters are available for creative adjustments. A manual control wheel is provided for greater camera control. HD movie recording is supported.

The PowerShot S120 and PowerShot S200 are expected to be available from late September. No local pricing provided, but Canon US press releases indicate a US$449 price point for the S120 in that market.

powershot-sx510-hs_blk_frt_New additions to Canon’s superzoom line-up are the PowerShot SX510 HS and PowerShot SX170 IS. The PowerShot SX510 HS features a 30x optical zoom, and the PowerShot SX170 IS has a 16x optical zoom. The SX510 HS combines a 12.1-megapixel, high-sensitivity CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 4 processor. It includes built-in Wi-Fi for sharing images and movies on social media sites as well as sending them to smartphones and tablets using the free Canon CameraWindow app.

GPS via mobile is also available by using the app to add location information from a GPS-enabled smartphone or tablet to images. Full HD Movie recording is available, complete with stereo sound and a special Super Slow Motion Movie mode.

The PowerShot SX170 IS lens starts at 28mm wide-angle and has a 16x zoom range. It comes with a 16-megapixel sensor and can record movies in HD video quality. A range of creative filters is available for use with stills and movie clips. Both models feature Eco mode, which helps users continue shooting for longer by conserving battery life. Up to 46 percent more photos can be captured on the PowerShot SX170 IS and 32 percent more on the PowerShot SX510 HS, according to Canon.

Both cameras include image stabilisation and include Canon’s ZoomPlus technology, – digital zoom to 60x on the PowerShot SX510 HS and 32x on the PowerShot SX170 IS.

The PowerShot SX510 HS and PowerShot SX170 IS will be available in local retail outlets in the coming weeks. The Powershot SX510 HS has been seen locally advertised around  $285 and the SX170 HS at around $220.
