Nikon rolls out J2

Nikon has announced a new model in its line of compact mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras: the Nikon 1 System J2 has a new metallic body, and a higher-resolution LCD than its predecessor, the J1.

The new model’s 3-inch LCD has a 921,000 dot resolution. A new Creative Mode provides fast access to full manual exposure controls (P,S,A,M) and automatic modes. The metallic body is available in a range of six colours.

The camera has a 10-megapixel ‘CX-format’ (13.2×8.8mm) CMOS sensor, 73 point AF array, and also captures 1080p HD video.

While this camera has been formally announced in similar markets overseas, and is featured on the local website, Nikon Australia has so far not provided pricing or release date details.

However, the J2 with 10-30mm kit lens is available now in the US at a suggested price of US550.

Accompanying the new camera is a 2.5x zoom, the 1 Nikkor 11-27.5mm f3.5-5.6 lens that Nikon says is a new ‘super-compact addition’. It’s smaller and lighter than current 10-30mm kit lens, and will sell for US$190. Nikon has also announced the WP-N1, an underwater case for its ILC camera range, for US$750. (As mentioned, no local pricing available.)

Hi Rich – I’ve put a request into Nikon but haven’t had a 100 percent success rate using that approach in the past. With stock already available in the US one would hope that local retailers aren’t going to miss out on pre-Christmas sales. Anyone out there from Nikon care to offer a release date and price? It doesn’t even look like local retailers are taking orders yet, which is a worru…

Hello again, Rich: Asked Nikon when the J2 was to be released and received this reply: ‘Nikon don’t have any retailers who currently have the J2 on shelves, but they can organise for any customer wanting to buy one. If you let me know what suburb they live, Nikon can organise to have one in the colour they want at their closest Nikon authorised reseller.’ Give me a call on 03 52781071 if you want to follow up.
