Five new digicams from Canon

February 7, 2011: Canon will refresh its compact digicam range with five new models in February and March.

The Ixus line-up will be extended by three new models, the 310 HS (pictured right) , 220 HS and 115 HS, all with 12.1-megapixel sensors and featuring Full HD movie capture at a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. A dedicated Movie button facilitates switching between photo and video recording. Intelligent Auto shooting is now available in ‘Movie’ mode and a new Movie Digest feature records four seconds of video before a photo is taken. These clips are automatically edited each day into one short Full HD movie.

The stand-out feature of the new IXUS 310 HS is its 3.2-inch LCD touch screen. This model also features a 4.4x optical zoom, 24mm wide f2 lens.

The Ixus 220HS (pictured left) is claimed as the world’s slimmest compact digital camera at just 19.5mm, but sports a 5x optical zoom lens with 24mm wide angle of view. The entry-level xus 115 HS comes with a 28mm wide angle lens and 4x zoom plus a 3-inch LCD screen.

The Ixus 310 HS replaces the Ixus 300 HS and IXUS 210 IS, while the Ixus 220 HS replaces the IXUS 130 IS.

Both of the new PowerShot models – additions to the Canon range rather than upgrade models – also feature 12.1-megapixel sensors and 14x optical zoom lenses with a 28mm equivalent wide angle of view. They also include P, Av, Tv and M control modes and Full HD video recording, plus a new iFrame video format that simplifies video importing, editing and sharing.

Users can apply a variety of creative filter effects, including Fish-eye, Miniature, Toy Camera, Monochrome, Super Vivid, Poster, Colour Accent and Colour Swap.

The new PowerShot SX230 HS (pictured right) is Canon’s first camera with a built-in GPS tagging system. The camera will remember where you have been with the log function and display using Google Maps. This model will be offered in black and red. The PowerShot SX220 HS offers the same features and design but lacks the GPS receiver. It will be available in grey.

The Ixus 220 HS and Ixus 115 HS will be available from February, while the Ixus 310 HS and the PowerShot SX230 HS and PowerShot SX220 HS are scheduled for release from March.

Unfortunately, pricing has not been supplied – even though two of the new cameras are supposed to be in stores in the next fortnight! Moreover, pricing has been announced in other markets, and keen Australian consumers can easily access this information – as can interested retailers. So for instance, for the two models to be launched in February, US pricing for the equivalent (‘ELPH’) models is $299 (Ixus 220HS) and $199 (Ixus 115 HS). In the UK, Canon has announced pricing of 199 and 179 pounds respectively.
