Foto rally defies wild weather

December 13, 2010: Over 500 photographers registered and, even better given the stormy weather, over 500 showed up a cold October Saturday in Sydney to participate in the Foto Riesel Foto Rally.

The rally, held in partnership with the Australian Centre for Photography, involved the participating photographers of all skill levels completing a series of photographic challenges while following a
pre-determined route map.

‘The response was much greater than we expected, and the turn-out on the day just blew us away, much like the gale force winds!’ said Foto Riesel managing director, Mark Alderson.

Foto Riesel hosted a presentation evening for the winners on November 23 in which all 30 finalists were presented with a certificate and a minor prize of a camera bag or tripod.

Major prizes were awarded to 10 winners across categories including Best Black and White Image, Best Candid Portrait and Best Interpretation of the Photographic Challenge. Each of the category winners were presented with prize packs containing various products, with a retail value of $500. Prizes were also presented for the Best Student Entry (Secondary and Tertiary) and Best Children’s Entry (Under 16).

The prize for Overall Best Image was awarded to Anthony Fau (image reproduced right) , who was presented with a Canon 60D Twin Lens Kit and EOS Crumpler bag (valued at $2199rrp) by Patrick Cavanagh, Canon Australia.

An exhibition featuring outstanding images from the Rally is currently being exhibited in the Foto Riesel Create Centre at 360 Kent St, Sydney, viewable weekdays from 8.30am – 5.30pm until the end of this month, and can also be viewed here. (www.fotoriesel.com.au).

‘We must thank Canon for their generous support of the event, plus the ACP for joining us in this great partnership opportunity; and fnally acknowledge the City of Sydney for bestowing us the honour of including the Foto Riesel Foto Rally in the Art and About program’.

Plans for the 2011 event are already underway, with the Foto Rally expected to run in September 2011, hopefully again as an Associated Event of Art and About.

Foto Riesel is also exploring the possibility of an additional event focused around PMA Sydney, in May.
