The Aperture Australia two-day photographic conference, held at the new International Conference Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, April 28-29 attracted 625 amateur and professional photographers from across the country, according to the organisers.
The event comprised a series of presentations and panel discussions over two days featuring Ken Duncan, fine art photographer Alexia Sinclair, and celebrity portrait photographer Gary Heery. It was hosted by TV journalist and keen photographer, Ray Martin.
Other top Australian photographers participating were Megan Lewis, fine art photographer Alexia Sinclair, landscape photographer Murray Fredericks, Aquabumps’ founder Eugene Tan, adventure sports photographer Krystle Wright, and ward-winning documentary photographer Jack Picone.
‘Aperture Australia was like no other event I’ve ever had the pleasure to speak at,’ said Ken Duncan. ‘As a presenter, I got so much out of just listening to the other speakers. And it’s great that people get to hear the real stories behind the journey of a photographer.
‘There was something special about the atmosphere at Aperture Australia. It was a unique event that did not just appeal to photographers, but anyone with an interest in photography in general. It brought together such a large and diverse crowd of photography enthusiasts, professionals and hobbyists that were so captivated by the speakers’ stories, and this was something the photography industry in Australia has never seen before.’
Photography has been topical in Sydney over the past few weeks, with the Aperture Australia event leading into the Head On photo festival which launched the following week.
While the organisers were hoping for up to 1000 attendees, achieving an attendance of over 600, especially with the asking price of tickets at $495 and upwards, was an outstanding result for the inaugural event. Certainly encouraging enough to go round again next year.
‘The feedback we’ve received was so humbling, Aperture Australia will be back bigger and better in 2019. We will have yet another outstanding lineup of exceptionally talented speakers,” said Aperture Australia director, Glenn McKimmin.
