Local retailers share ideas

Two Australian retailers featured this month in the popular PMA feature Marketing Ideas Exchange with Bill McCurry.

McCurryBrett Peters, Peters Camera House North Lakes, Qld, has launched a online auction site, Digital Camera Exchange (DCE), concentrating on used, antique, end-of-line, refurbished, and excess stock. He noted that though there are over 700 websites in Australia selling new cameras, DCE was something new to the photo industry.

‘I see DCE positioned to provide the photo industry, enthusiasts and the general public a site where they can buy and sell everything photographic, via auction or “buy it now”. DCE is not about trying to compete with those other 700 sites or our retail stores,’ Brett Peters told Bill McCurry.

DCE’s commission on selling is about half that charged by eBay, according to Mr Peters, and he encouraged retailers to get on board if they had excess or used stock gathering dust in the basement.

Alan Logue, Hutt St Photos Adelaide, had a more modest but nonetheless high-margin suggestion – upselling transfers to disc – whether they are film to CD or movies to DVD – to gold archival discs for an extra $10 a pop.

Mr Logue buys Verbatim Archival DVDs and Kodak Preservation CDs in bulk for less than $2 each. He said that about 50 percent of his customers take the archival option.

‘The margin on these discs is huge, and all for a minimal amount of time spent in the upsell,’ said Mr Logue. ‘NO ONE has commented on the fact that the discs are not titled or printed on.’
